Writing in 1950, historian Antony Dale noted that unnamed antiquaries had instructed an Old English word “brist” or “briz”, which means “divided”, might have contributed the first a part of the historic name Brighthelmstone.
In 2001 the music faculty BIMM opened in Brighton underneath the name The Brighton Institute of Modern Music. The school has approximately 1500 college students throughout Brighton, its degree programs at BIMM are validated by The University of Sussex and diploma courses are taught at the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy. Since the college opened it has expanded to turn into Europe’s largest music faculty with 6500 students learning at eight campuses throughout Europe together with Bristol, London, Manchester, Berlin, Dublin, Hamburg and Birmingham. Brighton museums embrace Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Preston Manor, Booth Museum of Natural History, Brighton Toy and Model Museum, and Brighton Fishing Museum, the long established social epicentre of the seafront, which incorporates artefacts from the West Pier. The Royal Pavilion can also be open to the general public, serving as a museum to the British Regency. Brighton is the house of the UK’s first Walk of Fame which celebrates the many rich and famous people related to town.
